I have 2019.1 license with a year of maintenance that will expire at the middle of next year(2020). Do I have purchase an upgrade to use the 2020.1 product?

Because you have an active maintenance contract you do not have to purchase an upgrade to get version 2020.1 but you will need a new license specific to 2020.1. To get this, logon to you account, click on your name and select "Downloads & Licenses". Click the "Request Upgrade" button next to the SOQL Studio line item. This will update your product list to show 2020.1 and email the new license to you. You can download 2020.1 right from that page.
